Wealth Management Summit Tips

During a Wealth Management Summit being held this week in Boston, Singapore and Geneva, private banking executives provided some investment tips.

Jennifer Tay, Citi Private Bank, Asia-Pacific Head of Portfolio Counselling

Market Comments by Derek Frey

This week all eyes will be on the Fed. and their interest rate announcement coming at 2:15 EST on Wednesday. This meeting will set the tone for many markets for the remainder of the 1st quarter. We are not expecting the FOMC to do anything and that should be disappointing for a market that has all but built in a rate cut sometime soon. This meeting should add even more volatility to an already very volatile trading environment in stocks, bonds, and commodities.

The Dow Theory

By: Martin Chandra

You will hear a lot about the Dow Theory as you travel through your trading career. Dow himself never actually used the phrase. That came later as analysts began to use the term.

I should back up here slightly and mention that in 1884 Dow published his first stock market average of 11 stocks. From the original 11 stocks there were some changes and rearrangements of the average until finally in 1928 he settled on 30 stocks which are now know as the industrial average and that is where we get the term the 'Dow Jones Industrial Average'.

Investing: Singing the blues

By Conrad de Aenlle -

Good companies should be good investments, but there are times when the opposite is true. Unfortunately for holders of blue-chip stocks, this has been one of those times.

Research by Richard Bernstein, a strategist at Merrill Lynch, shows that companies whose stocks receive an A-plus rating from Standard & Poor's - meaning they have 10-year histories of fast yet stable growth of earnings and dividends - have reached a deep valuation discount to weaker B-minus companies. The discount follows a spate of poor performance by the A-plus stocks, but Bernstein said it might be worth betting on a turnaround.

Investing options with Japan could pay off again

By John Waggoner -

For nearly a decade, Japan dealt with its collapsing banking system by putting its hands over its ears and singing loudly. Not surprisingly, this strategy didn't work. But recent reforms have restored Japan's banks -- and its stock market, as well.

If you decide to go east, however, go through a diversified Pacific fund: As tempting as Japan looks now, there's no need to confine yourself to one country.

Parachute Investing

by Al Thomas -

Ever jumped out of an airplane? It's OK if you have on a parachute. Pretty dumb if you don't. Every buy any stocks, mutual funds or Exchange Traded Funds? It's OK if you know how much you are willing to risk. Pretty dumb if you don't.

Parachute investing is buying an equity with a parachute so you won't risk all your money or, better yet, give back the profit you have made as the stock or fund went up and then goes down. If you bought that hummer at $12 per share and during the past couple of years seen it go up to $52 you don't want to give back that nice profit, do you? With a parachute you can save most of it. How?

Five foreigners that figure to win

These international stocks have an edge over U.S. rivals

By Barbara Kollmeyer -

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Just like that old Irving Berlin tune, what the savvy investor may find these days is that anything a U.S company can do, an international rival can do -- sometimes better.

Investing in European stocks year-to-date would have certainly brought gains to many investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) is down 2.2% so far this year, while the EuroStoxx 50 is up 12%, though those markets have been helped in part by a rally for the euro versus the U.S. dollar.

Chinese VC investing plummets

By Shu-Ching Jean Chen in Hong Kong -

Venture capital investment in China plunged by 43% to $165 million in first-quarter 2005, hit by legal uncertainties that a foreign exchange regulation created, according to a survey by Beijing-based consulting firm Zero2IPO Ltd.

A total of 28 VC investors sank $165 million into 35 Chinese companies in the first quarter, of which 80% were located in Beijing. That's down from $285 million registered in the fourth quarter of 2004 and marks a decline from the torrid investment activity of the previous four quarters, Zero2IPO said.

Oversold stocks now make investing your money easier

At last! The word oversold – market jargon for "too cheap" – is starting to reappear in analysts' recommendations. This suggests investors are readjusting to the hefty share price falls of the past two months, and looking for bargains.

We are also getting buy recommendations. Among stocks to score these last week were the ANZ Bank, after its latest profit rise (which Australian analysts reckon makes it the best-performing Australian bank) and Telecom.

When the ducks are quacking, the saying goes, Wall Street feeds them, and right now we ducks are quacking for a steady diet of China-related investment opportunities. U.S. depositary receipts are a pure investment play But beware lack of liquidity, effects of exchange rates.

Want your investment portfolio to keep time with the sizzling hot emerging markets of India and China, but you're leery of the fee structures woven into many mutual fund products?

Ideally, Canadian investors would be able to play worldwide stock markets — even those in developing countries run by less-than-democratic governments — with the same ease with which we now buy shares on the New York Stock Exchange or even on the London Stock Exchange.
